I was watching TGILC season 4 episode recently. One of the contestant was making a joke about NRI's drinking only bottled water in India and tap water in USA. Well, over the years and specially after my visit to India, I take NRI jokes sportingly. So it did not irk me.
The joke states that NRIs insist on bottled water in India. Well, it was opposite for me, I preferred cool and sweet tasting water from earthen pot (matka) instead of bottled water. However I did use bottled water when necessary like traveling in trains and that too because I didn't want to spend my small vacation (3 weeks in 3 years) being sick and not being with my friends and family.
Also, we NRI's behave identical to resident Indians when it comes to drinking water. We just
store the tap water, filter it (in some cases tap water is clean enough to not need filtering ) and drink it. We go out we fill up water bottles or buy bottled water. It is exactly the same as my family in India. Why? because thats common sense. It might be the case that the joke was about NRI's showing off their wealth. Well thats a more of "Indian" trait than "NRI" trait. Don't we love to show off. Read any article about cricket, movies and outsourcing and you will know.
I understand its hard to change public perception and as stated earlier NRI jokes dont irk me.
If it helps people to have a laugh or two then good. What irked me while watching the show was the remark by esteemed judge Shatrughan Sinha. He said NRI's are "non required indians".
This comes from a B-grade actor who later joined politics and now instead of working public welfare and his constituency, judges a stand up comedy show. This piece of shit actor had total of 5 expressions throughout his entire acting career and he decides to label approximately 1.5 million Indians as non-required. And while saying so he conviniently forgot that during last BJP government in India, the Prime Minister Mr Vajpayee actively reached out to NRI community to invest money in India. This moron did not have guts to say such things then.
Phew, rant over. I feel light now.

Mr. Chetan,
The show you have discussed is a laughter show and it is meant to be funny. If you stay in America and watched comedy show, you should know that they make fun of anything and everything and some may be very cheap. I also stay in USA and I don't find it that objectionable. I talked about this joke to everyone I know and everyone laughed. Did you object when you saw a sienfield episode where they made derogatory remarks on Gandhi? It is objectionable but probably who cares? It is meant to be funny and just have a good laugh!!
As far as your comments on Shatrughan Sinha is concerned, it is objectionable. He was not a B-grade actor. He is a well trained actor and who started from an extra and could compete with super stars and later several stars stopped working with him. He is natural scene stealer and considered one of the best ever. He was the one who opposed emergency in India before joining politics. He is my ideal and he will always be. Just because he made a funny comment, you wouldn't jump to this conclusion. Mr. Shatrughan Sinha has more qualtities and achievement to speak than your profile. So, please mind your language otherwise you will be judged as B-grade NRI.
Sanjeev
Mr Sanjeev,
If you had watch the episode you would know that it was not meant to be funny. It was said it most serious tone possible.
Yes, there are lot of shows that make fun of India and Gandhi. But they aren't from my own countrymen. Are they?
As far as judgment and language, I don't think your idol and great actor Mr Sinha cares about my blog. Similarly, I give a rat's ass if you judge me as a B-grade NRI.
Also, if you like Mr Sinha so much, write a blog post about his acting abilities.Stop telling me what and what not to write in my blog.Stop wasting your time and energy on my blog and get a life.
Mr. Chetan,
I have watched all episodes of TGILC 4. Apart from that, Mr. Shatrughan Sinha's two brothers are doctors in USA.
If you don't have a sense of humor, don't watch funny comedies.
If India is doing well without you and me, offcourse its better without us. So, we are non required India till we prove our worth for India. I don't think that even 1% of us has proven that.
Sanjeev
Mr Sanjeev,
When I was offended by Mr. Sinha comment on the show you know what I did?
I stopped watching that show and ranted on my OWN blog. I didn't write a letter to the TV show producer to stop their work. For the simple reason that I don't control their actions.
Is that so hard to figure out for you, needle head? Stop being a smart ass and tell me what to do or what no to do?
And If a country starts to make it compulsory prove your worth before you are required then my friend lot people will become non required Indians and I think Mr Sinha and his fans will also be included in that list.
Bottom line is stop thinking that you can tell me not to watch "funny comedies". For your information, there is no such thing as "funny comedies".
Chetan
PS: I think you have too much of time on your hand to google "shatrughan sinha" and constantly read this blog. Well I don't. So all your wise-ass comments from now on will be deleted.
